PEF's Michael Stone Invited to Speak About Fab Labs at International and National Conferences
Michael Stone, vice president of innovative learning at Public Education Foundation, delivered the opening address at a conference in Torres Vedras, Portugal this week. Mr. Stone was invited to this city, an hour north of Lisbon, so that he could help the community create a school-based digital fabrication lab similar to the 35 labs that Mr. Stone has helped Hamilton County Schools install in public schools across the district. His travel expenses were paid through partnerships with the conference organizers and the US Embassy in Portugal.
PEF's Promotes Dr. Keith White to Vice President of Research and Effectiveness
Public Education Foundation has promoted Dr. Keith White to vice president of Research and Effectiveness. Since joining PEF 10 years ago, Dr. White has advanced the organization’s use of data to enable PEF to better serve students in Hamilton County Public Schools and to evaluate the impact of PEF programs such as Camp College, STEP UP Chattanooga, and Project Inspire.
Fourth annual Fab Institute giving educators creative opportunities with technology
The Hamilton County School District partnered with the Public Education Foundation and Volkswagen to offer teachers a unique opportunity to dive deep into technology. Monday was the first day of the three-day Digital Fabrication Conference designed to introduce students to STEM. Fourth Annual Chattanooga Fab Institute Draws Educators from 17 States
The Chattanooga Fabrication Institute, a three-day seminar at which educators from across the nation gain hands-on digital fabrication experience, kicked off Monday at the Chattanooga Whiskey Event Hall. During the conference, attendees visit Hamilton County Schools' various Fab Labs to learn how to use emergent technologies, like 3D and laser printing, and bring those lessons and skills back to their classrooms.This year marks the seminar's fourth anniversary and its first sold-out event with 150 attendees from 17 states. -- Chattanooga Times Free Press, Carmen Nesbitt
Camp College Helps First-Generation College Students Navigate Applications
Every summer, a group of rising high school seniors travels to the scenic University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, for a three-day intensive college prep boot camp. This year's camp kicked off Monday. The Chattanooga Times Free Press spoke with students and camp counselors Tuesday after the students had a chance to tour the campus and work on essays. Many of the students will be first-generation college students whose parents or family members haven't experienced the application process and are unable to guide them through steps like applying for financial aid, scholarships or writing a college essay. Camp College aims to fill that gap. Public Education Foundation Announces 10th Cohort of STEM Fellows
The Public Education Foundation announced Tuesday the selection of 31 teachers from the Southeast Tennessee region who will participate in the 10th cohort of PEF’s STEM Fellow program during the 2022-2023 academic year. The teachers will engage in a year of professional learning about best practices in STEM education and will have numerous opportunities to visit businesses in the region that thrive because of the STEM skills of their employees.
