Bill serves as the Vice President for Leadership Initiatives at the Public Education Foundation and is the Director of the Principal Leadership Academy, a leadership program for aspiring principals created and guided through collaboration between Hamilton County Schools, Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the Public Education Foundation.
Bill is a native of Chattanooga, TN, serving for 30 years as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in Chattanooga Public Schools and Hamilton County Schools. Bill was educated in Hamilton County Public Schools (Central High), received a B.S. in Secondary Mathematics Education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and earned a Master’s Degree Educational Leadership from Tennessee Technological University. Bill served as a classroom teacher for 11 years at Tyner High School as a high school mathematics, physics and computer programming instructor . He worked as an assistant principal at both the middle and high school levels (Dalewood Middle and CSAS Upper School) for 6 years and as a principal for middle/high school (CSAS Upper School) for 9 years. In 2002 Bill was recruited as the Director for Hamilton County/Public Education Foundation’s Schools for a New Society high school reform initiative, one of seven school districts in the nation supported through a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. For four years Bill worked as a consultant with The Schools Foundation in Northern Alabama designing and facilitating a leadership networking program, Principally Speaking, with principals and assistant principals in the Huntsville City, Madison County (AL), and Madison City (AL) school systems. He has done additional educational consulting work for Nashville (TN) Metro Public Schools, Cumberland County (NC) Public Schools and for the Education Alliance of Northern Kentucky. Bill completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Change Leadership Program, the National Association of Secondary Schools training inBreaking Ranks II: Strategies for Leading High School Reform, the National Association of Elementary Schools Leadership Immersion Institute National Principal Mentoring Training and the Annenberg Institute and National School Reform Faculty’s training for Critical Friends Groups.
His wife of 41 years, Susan (also a former Hamilton County Schools principal), and Bill have two sons, Dave and Rob, a ten year old grandson, Robby, Jr., and a four old granddaughter, Alice Jane. His favorite role is as ‘Pop’ for Robby and Alice! Bill and Susan are active members of Tyner United Methodist Church where he sings in the church choir and is a member of the church’s men’s quartet. He enjoys playing the banjo, fishing with grandson Robby and attending college football and Atlanta Braves baseball games.
