School Plan Summaries

2009-2010 MSNS Reform Booklet

We are now entering the fourth year of implementation of the important reform initiative, Middle Schools for a New Society. Thanks to the generous support of the Lyndhurst Foundation, MSNS continues to involve every middle school in Hamilton County. Entire faculties are engaged in this work. Parents are engaged and so are students. Together, faculty leadership, parents, and students have formed vibrant leadership teams at each of our middle schools.

These leadership teams are moving schools toward higher levels of achievement. Our schools are places where learning happens, not just for students, but for adults as well. As our schools learn more about best practices and the latest strategies for teaching all children, they are becoming what educators call “Leading” schools – schools that get results, not by chance, but because of their strategic efforts over time.

Each school has written two narratives detailing the work thus far. One narrative reflects on the work of 2008-2009, while a second details the school’s unique vision for the 2009-2010 school year. Though each school has a distinct plan, all are working toward the common purpose of transforming their school to ensure that each and every student will be prepared to thrive in a rigorous high school. This document is a compilation of their reflection and vision narratives, exactly as submitted by each of the schools.

As we move forward with the redesign of our middle schools, it is important that we continue to learn from one another. To that end, we share these narratives as a foundation for reflection and collaborative thinking in the years to come.

“Due to the funds that were provided… …for us by the Benwood Initiative, we’ve been able to provide some of the best research-based workshops for our teachers to implement reading strategies in the classroom, and we’ve established a literacy block which is two hours per day, every day, for all of our students.”
