Once you have done a self-assessment, it is time to consider a variety of college characteristics as you begin researching colleges. Remember that there are over 3,000 colleges and universities in this country, not to mention international options. The key will be to narrow your choices and to keep in mind that there will be several schools that match your preferences.

The following is by no means an exhaustive list, but rather a place to begin. Some basic characteristics to consider include:

Facilities
Academic: library, classrooms, lecture halls, science labs, computer labs and technological support, language labs, art studios, music facilities, theatre facilities, writing center, etc.

Athletic: varsity and non-varsity facilities, weight room, cardiovascular equipment, athletic fields, equestrian facilities, etc.

Residential and Student Life: dormitories/single sex or coed, theme housing, freshman housing, guaranteed housing, meal plans and dining hall options, required housing, student center facilities, bookstore, etc.
