KnowHow2Go
The sooner they start thinking about college, the more likely they are to enroll. So, we’re taking college advising to middle school.
A 2-year grant of $150,000 from the Public Education Network (PEN), with funding through the Lumina Foundation’s KnowHow2Go campaign, will expand college counseling to students in grades 8-10 beginning in 2009. Target middle schools for the pilot program will include Hixson, Brown, East Lake and East Ridge. Major activities will include:
- A significant increase in support for and communication with middle school counselors and teachers;
- Significant programming, including college tours and financial aid presentations, for students AND parents
- Greater interaction among community organizations such as PEF, GEAR UP, and Girls Inc.
- Tie-in to the Lumina Foundation’s KnowHow2Go media campaign, as well as the use of Facebook and other new technologies to reach students and their families.

“Due to the funds that were provided…
…for us by the Benwood Initiative, we’ve been able to provide some of the best research-based workshops for our teachers to implement reading strategies in the classroom, and we’ve established a literacy block which is two hours per day, every day, for all of our students.”
