CHATTANOOGA, TN - Hamilton County’s Public Education Foundation (PEF) will offer its Winter Leadership Institute this weekend to provide training and support in the areas of whole school improvement and instructional leadership.

Realizing that collaboration among public school leaders is paramount, the PEF worked with a principals’ advisory committee to plan the institute to be held in Nashville Friday January 31 and Saturday February 1. Hamilton County’s 81 elementary, middle and high school principals, selected district leaders, and Superintendent Jesse Register will attend the workshop.

“The Leadership Institutes give our principals and school leaders the opportunity to get away from the distractions they encounter on a daily basis, and provide a community where they can network and learn from nationally recognized speakers and their peers,” said PEF President Dan Challener.

The Winter Leadership Institute will be led by a number of outstanding educational leaders, including Dr. Irving Jones, Sr., who was recently selected the MetLife/National Association of Secondary School Principals 2003 National High School Principal.

Dr. Jones will be sharing strategies for building effective relationships with students, teachers, parents, and community partners. “The key strategy that I will share with them is that the kids always come first and that everyone leads the learning,” said Dr. Jones.

Dr. Mark E. Mendenhall holds the J. Burton Frierson Chair of Excellence in Business Leadership at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His keynote will address the issues of vision and why leaders fail. Dr. Mendenhall is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of international human resource management. He has authored many books and articles on human resources, developing leaders, resource management, and organizational behavior.

Dr. Barrie Bennett, associate professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, will also serve as a keynote speaker. Dr. Bennett is currently working with several school districts in Canada, Australia, and the United States on the integration of multiple instructional processes in the design of more powerful learning environments. He is the co-author of Beyond Monet: The Artful Science of Instructional Integration.

“During the two-day event, our principals will be involved in break-out sessions that will address the specific leadership issues they’re facing,” said Hamilton County Superintendent Jesse Register. “It’s imperative for the progress of our school system that leaders have the opportunity to interact and communicate their experiences with one another, and PEF’s Leadership Institutes provide us that wonderful opportunity.”

I can’t imagine what new principals ...
... did in the past before PEF began supporting these programs. I hope that PEF will continue to provide these types of support programs for many generations. Imagine the possibilities!
